About Beggars China
There seems to be quite some distance between a record shop in West London in the 1970s and China in 2010. Different countries, different people, different times. When Martin Mills opened the first Beggars Banquet record shop in 1973, Chinese music fans must have seemed a long way off.
Not so any more. Over the last 30 years, Beggars Banquet has developed into the most respected group of record labels in the world. Now simply known as “Beggars Group” – comprising of four legendary labels 4AD, Matador, Rough Trade and XL Recordings – our catalogue has won over music fans regardless of geography. There is something unifying about this “independent music” and it doesn’t matter where you are from.
With a catalogue that ranges from the multiple Grammy award winning soulful pop of Adele, through to the cult alternative rock of The Pixies, there seems to be an impossibly wide range of sounds coming out of Beggars, but they do all have something in common: a) The artists and music are all of the highest quality, and b) They are 100% independent, completely removed from the manufactured world of pop that seems to be enveloping us all – these guys make their own music and perform it live.
Music like this is as important in China as it is in Europe or America. With the rise of the many outdoor music festivals in China, or the increasing demand for new sounds across the Chinese internet you, the Chinese music fans, have spoken – you want something real. Beggars is here to answer that call!
And so…Beggars China is born. Going under the Chinese name 贝格, (the individual labels to be known as 贝格-4AD , 贝格-Matador , 贝格-Rough Trade , 贝格-XL Recordings ) this is the first step in what we hope will be a long love affair with the music fans of China. More music coming to China, more live shows in China, more communication between you and the 贝格 artists.
贝格 is Beggars and you, together…
